Summary
Nick Bostrom is a Swedish-born philosopher and globally recognized authority on the future of artificial intelligence, human enhancement ethics, and existential risk. He is a Professor at the University of Oxford and was the founding Director of the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI), as well as the Oxford Martin Programme on the Impacts of Future Technology. He is currently Principal Researcher at the Macrostrategy Research Initiative.
Bostrom holds a PhD (Philosophy) from the London School of Economics, an MSc in Physics and Computational Neuroscience from Stockholm University and King’s College London, and an MA in Philosophy and Physics. His published works include Anthropic Bias: Observation Selection Effects in Science and Philosophy (2002), Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies (2014), and Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World (2024). Superintelligence, in particular has been credited with shaping the modern global conversation on AI safety and was the work that first set RQLAB’s founder on our path.
Core Warning
Bostrom’s central concern is the value alignment problem — the danger that an artificial intelligence system, once more capable than humans, could pursue goals that diverge from human ethics and well-being. He defines superintelligence as “any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest.” He argues that intelligence itself is a neutral force, and without careful design, even small misalignments in goals could become catastrophic once amplified by superintelligent systems. He warns that humanity may face a one-time “singularity” moment where the trajectory of our future is determined by whether advanced AI is aligned with our values. This is not science fiction, he insists, but a real and pressing governance challenge. His work has inspired policymakers, researchers, and technologists around the world to treat AI alignment as a top priority.
